This prestigious leadership position places Abby at the forefront of HOSA’s mission to support future healthcare professionals across the state.
As a sophomore, Abby was elected by her peers to represent them as President-Elect for her junior year. During the 2023-2024 school year, she was responsible for the Super Region Piedmont Triad Region, which is comprised of Surry, Stokes, and Yadkin counties along with Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, and Rockingham counties; and the Southwest Region, made up of Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly, and Union counties.
Abby exemplifies extraordinary leadership skills and was voted as the NC HOSA State President based on the following guidelines. She was first judged based on her application, resume, GPA, and essay. She was recognized in the top five from her super region, then moved on to the onsite portion at the State Leadership Conference (SLC). Once at SLC, she took a test on HOSA and Parliamentary Procedure, was interviewed, and gave an oral presentation. The top two from each super region were then slated to run for the position. During the business session of the conference, Abby was required to give a campaign speech and answer a random "fishbowl" question in front of all the voting delegates, who then cast their ballots. The elected state officer with the highest overall score from all of the previous items was named President Elect, who would then serve as the State President.
As the newly elected NC HOSA State President, Abby oversees the organization’s statewide initiatives, working closely with regional and local chapters to promote leadership, education, and professional growth in healthcare-related fields. Her responsibilities include presiding over state officer meetings, attending board meetings as a member of the NC HOSA Board of Directors, and leading major state-wide events, including Fall Leadership Conferences and regional competitions.
Ashley Hultman, Health Sciences Teacher and HOSA Advisor, states, “Abby’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to advancing healthcare education has truly set a standard of excellence. Her accolades not only reflect her hard work and passion for the field, but also inspire her peers and the next generation of healthcare professionals. I am so proud of Abby and I am excited to see how she will continue to make a positive impact in the healthcare community! We are lucky to have her represent Mount Airy High School!"
Previous educator Lynn Snow shared, “Abby exemplifies scholarship, leadership, maturity, and an unwavering commitment to her goals. She doesn’t just understand what it means to help others—she takes action. I am honored to have watched her develop into the young woman she is now.”
In her role, Abby supports and mentors a team of state officers, guiding them in their leadership journey. Additionally, if any super region is left without representation, she will step in to ensure that those counties receive the necessary leadership and support. Throughout the year, Abby has been traveling across the state, attending conferences and engaging with local chapters to foster growth and development within NC HOSA.
Mount Airy City Schools celebrates Abby’s remarkable achievement and looks forward to witnessing the impact of her leadership on HOSA and the future of healthcare education in North Carolina.
