Mount Airy City Schools (MACS) is pleased to announce that Dr. Sandy George has been promoted to Executive Director of Auxiliary Services/Principal for the district. Dr. George has been principal of Mount Airy High School for the past 16 years. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Physical Education Degree from Pfeiffer College in 1984 and her Masters of Physical Education from Gardner-Webb College in 1988. In 1992, she went on to earn her Masters in School Administration from Gardner-Webb. In 2012, she graduated with her Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Appalachian State University.
Dr. George began her educational career with Mount Airy City Schools in 1984 as a health/physical education teacher, track, and volleyball coach. In 1990, she led her team to be the 1A/2A State Volleyball Champions. She was named Volleyball Coach of the Year in the 1990 and 1991 seasons. Her administrative career began in 1996 when she became the assistant principal of Mount Airy High School (MAHS). She served as assistant principal for six years before becoming the school’s principal in 2002.
Throughout her career as leader of MAHS, Dr. George has been named principal of the year twice. In 2011, she earned Region 7 Principal of the Year for North Carolina and led her school as it was awarded the title of 2011 National Blue Ribbon School. Through her leadership she has supported staff and students as they have captured numerous conference, regional, and state titles. For their efforts in the 2016-2017 school year, Mount Airy High School won the coveted Wells Fargo State Cup for 1A athletics.
Most recently, Dr. George has earned the distinct honor of being named President of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) for the 2018-2019 school year. This presidency has responsibilities that will allow her to lead athletic excellence across the state. According to NCHSAA bylaws, “The President shall preside at all meetings of the Association, all meetings of the Board of Directors and all meetings of the Executive Committee, at all meetings of committees in charge of various contests, and shall discharge all other duties of the presiding officer. It shall be the duty of the President to call meetings of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee from time to time as the business of the Association requires their attention.”
The skill set which Dr. George has developed in her years of leadership will serve MACS well as she directs areas such as K-12 discipline, transportation, school nutrition, and assisting with the completion of capital outlay projects. Dr. George will also continue serving as principal of MAHS in a Co-Principal role which will fulfill her responsibilities for NCHSAA.
Dr. Kim Morrison stated, “I am excited that we are promoting Dr. Sandy George. She has contributed much in the last 33 years to serve the students and families of Mount Airy City Schools. I am glad we will be able to use her abilities to serve in an even bigger role. She has been elected to a prestigious statewide athletic office of President for NCHSAA and this position will give her the flexibility to impact athletics across the state and fulfill her obligation to this organization.”
Dr. George noted, “I am excited for this new opportunity in Mount Airy City Schools. I love the staff and students at Mount Airy High School and will miss working with them on a daily basis. However, I am excited to continue my work with this great school system and to also have the ability to impact students throughout our system and the state.”
Effective July 1, 2018, Chief Operations Officer Jason Dorsett, will be the Chief Officer and Interim Principal for Mount Airy High School. Mr. Dorsett’s previous experience as MAHS Assistant Principal, Jones Intermediate School Principal, and Mount Airy Middle School Interim Principal, prepares him for stepping into this role for at least a year. Mr. Dorsett will lead the day-to-day operations of MAHS. Beginning July 1, 2019, Dr. George will transition to the full time role of Executive Director of Auxiliary Services.
